Simone Bancora, finalist of the JEC Composites Challenge

The JEC Composites Challenge is the first international competition for PhD students selected for the quality of their research in composite materials.

The challenge: 5 minutes to present their thesis using a single slide in front of a jury of industrial and academic experts. 10 PhD students from around the world were selected for this edition from dozens of applications.

Simone BANCORA, PhD student at GeM, is one of the finalists.

From pressure to geometry: a scalable method for realistic textile reconstruction. We propose a method to reconstruct the architecture of a dry preform based on simple data acquisition. As the laminate is compacted, a pressure-sensitive film is used to capture the mechanical signature of the ply stack. Using this information, the meso-scale geometry of the preform is interpreted.

The winners of the challenge will be announced on 2 June 2021 (the event, initially scheduled for 4 March 2020, was postponed due to the health crisis).
