Laboratory organisation

Founded in 2004 through the merger of three laboratories in Nantes, LGCNSN (Laboratoire de Génie Civil de Nantes Saint-Nazaire), LMM (Laboratoire de Mécanique et Matériaux) and LAMM (Laboratoire d’Applications des Matériaux à la Mécanique), GeM (UMR 6183) is a research laboratory in civil engineering, mechanics and materials.

It is jointly operated by CNRS, Centrale Nantes and Nantes Université, and brings together 218 people on its Nantes and Saint-Nazaire sites.

Role of the council

Set up at the request of CNRS (1982 statutory decree and decision no. 920368SOSI of 28 October 1992, as amended), the laboratory council gives its opinion on:

  • the status, programme and coordination of research, and the composition of the teams;
  • the budget to be requested by the laboratory and the allocation of the resources it receives;
  • the laboratory’s research contract policy;
  • technology transfer and the dissemination of scientific information;
  • human resources management;
  • training through research;
  • the follow-up to the opinion of the section(s) of the CNRS National Committee for Scientific Research to which the laboratory reports;
  • any measure concerning the organisation and functioning of the laboratory that may affect the situation and working conditions of the staff.

The director may also consult or inform the council on any other matter. In practice, the council also deals with the organisation of laboratory days, the criteria for awarding doctoral contracts and the running of the laboratory: budget, experimental and computing resources, etc.
