Jessy Simon, 2nd prize for best thesis at JNC22

Jessy Simon, received the 2nd prize for best thesis at the 22nd Journées Nationales des Composites (JNC22), held online from 28 to 30 June 2021.
Awarded from more than 60 candidates, the prize recognised both the scientific quality of the thesis work and the quality of the video presentation.

Jessy has been preparing his thesis at GeM since 2018 as part of IRT Jules Verne’s PERFORM programme, developing a finite element model to simulate the forming of dry preforms made using Tailored Fibre Placement (TFP) technology. TFP preforms are made by laying a continuous reinforcing tow stitched onto a backing material along chosen curvilinear paths, so as to obtain continuous fibre reinforcements with continuously varying orientation and thickness within the preform. This technology leads to optimal composite structures by combining textile additive manufacturing and composite stamping, while eliminating the production waste generated by traditional forming. In addition to the numerical aspects, experimental work is carried out to validate the model.
He is supervised by Christophe BINETRUY (GeM, thesis director), with Nahiene Hamila (IRDL, co-director) and Sébastien COMAS-CARDONA (GeM, co-director).

JNC 22
The Journées Nationales sur les Composites (JNC) have been organised every two years since 1978 by the Association pour les MAtériaux Composites (AMAC). They provide a regular review of the latest scientific and technological advances, and a key forum for meetings and discussion between academics, researchers and industry professionals working on composites.
