GST15SNS: the Numerical Simulation of Welding Commission, set up within the AFM in 2002, has become a Scientific and Technical Group (GST) to support the continued growth of welding simulation by fostering links and exchanges between industrial and academic stakeholders. These exchanges improve the overall understanding of welding in order to simulate numerically the behaviour of a welded structure (metallurgical weldability, distortion, residual stresses, fatigue strength, damage), based on validation test cases (simulation/test comparisons). For the past 4 years, the group has also covered the numerical simulation of additive manufacturing processes, whose methods are generally very close to those of welding simulation.
NAFEMS is an independent association of 1,550 companies, universities and other institutions worldwide, 120 of them in France, whose main purpose is to share and promote numerical simulation for engineering through thematic communities and working groups. Members range from large global companies and medium-sized organisations in all sectors to professional associations and technical centres, academic institutions and players in the field such as software publishers and digital engineering service providers. NAFEMS’ main missions are to increase confidence in simulation results, train engineers in advanced methods and techniques in all disciplines, including FEA, CFD and other technologies such as AI, HPC, data analytics and digital twins, and to publish, etc.
