‘Polygonal finite element method – recent trends and advancements’
Abstract: The seminal work of Wachspress, who proposed a general method to construct finite element shape functions over arbitrary polytopes has opened up a new area of research called ‘polygonal finite element method’. The shape functions over arbitrary polytopes are collectively called barycentric coordinates and finds applications in geometric modeling, computer graphics and finite element computations. In this talk, after a brief overview of the different approaches to construct the barycentric coordinates, a semi-analytical approach, called the scaled boundary finite element method over arbitrary polytopes will be discussed. The efficacy and convergence properties of the approach will be demonstrated with a few standard benchmark problems.
